Son #3 2 챕터 마지막 클레어는 자신이 생산(?)한 Product에 "It was a he" "I had a son." 라고 생각하며 it이 아닌 인격을 부여하며 자신의 아기라는 자각을 하기 시작한다. 하지만 현대 영어에서도 보면 갓난아이에게 it라는 표현을 쓰고 있다. ex) "Oh, look at it. Son #1 소설의 시작은 어린 소녀가 눈이 가려져 있는 상태에서 움츠려드는 장면으로 시작한다. 이 소녀는 이 상황이 당연한 절차라고 인정하며 견뎌 내는 모양새다.사실 이곳에 들어오기 전 다른 산모(Vessel)에게서 이 상황에 대해서 얼핏 들었었다.
